The Xinhua News Agency is the official press agency of the government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the biggest center for collecting information and press conferences in the PRC. It is one of the two news agencies in the PRC, the other being the China News Service. Xinhua is an institution of the State Council of China. Xinhua reports directly to the Communist Party of China’s Publicity Department and Public Information Department.

Xinhua employs more than 10,000 people—as compared to about 55,000 for Thompson Reuters; has 107 bureaus worldwide both collecting information on other countries and dispensing information about China; and maintains 31 bureaus in China—one for each province plus a military bureau. As most of the newspapers in China cannot afford to station correspondents abroad, or even in every Chinese province, they rely on Xinhua feeds to fill their pages. People’s Daily, for example, uses Xinhua material for approximately 25 percent of its stories. Xinhua is a publisher as well as a news agency—it owns more than 20 newspapers and a dozen magazines, and it prints in eight languages: Chinese, English, Spanish, French, Russian, Portuguese, Arabic and Japanese.

The website’s goal is defined as the following by the website’s FAQ: “To meticulously catalog all relevant information about electronic games (computer, console, and arcade) on a game-by-game basis, and then offer up that information through flexible queries and ‘data mining’. In layman’s terms, it’s a huge game database.” As of January 17, 2010, the catalog includes more than 91 separate gaming platforms (consoles, computers and handheld devices including mobile phones) and more than 30,000 unique games.

GameFAQs is a website that hosts FAQs and walkthroughs for video games. It was created in November 1995 by Jeff “CJayC” Veasey and was bought by CNET Networks in May 2003. It is currently owned by CBS Interactive. The site has a database of video game information, cheat codes, reviews, game saves, and screenshots, almost all of which is submitted by volunteer contributors. The systems covered include the 8-bit Atari platform through modern consoles, as well as computer games. Submissions made to the site are reviewed by the site’s current editor, Allen “SBAllen” Tyner.

GameFAQs hosts an active message board community, which has a separate discussion board for each game in the site’s database, along with a variety of other boards. Since 2004, most of the game-specific boards have been shared between GameFAQs and GameSpot, another CNET/CBS website. The site also runs a daily opinion poll and tournament contests.

GameFAQs has been positively reviewed by The Guardian and Entertainment Weekly. As of 2009, GameFAQs.com is one of the 300 highest-trafficked English-language websites according to Alexa.
